It was initially used as an insulating material in the aerospace industry, but in recent decades, ETFE has found a new life in the world of modern architecture\u2014especially as a revolutionary alternative to glass in large-scale roofing and fa\u00e7ade systems.<\/p><p>ETFE is most commonly used in the form of <strong>thin, flexible film sheets<\/strong>, either as <strong>single layers<\/strong> or in <strong>multi-layer inflated cushions<\/strong> (also called ETFE pillows). These film membranes are supported by lightweight steel structures or tension cables, creating what is known as a <strong>tensile membrane system<\/strong>. The result is a building envelope that is not only visually stunning but also highly functional.<\/p><p>What makes ETFE especially attractive to architects and engineers is its <strong>unique combination of properties<\/strong>:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Extremely lightweight<\/strong> \u2013 It weighs only about <strong>1% of glass<\/strong>, which significantly reduces the structural load and cost.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>High light transmission<\/strong> \u2013 ETFE allows up to <strong>90-95% of natural light<\/strong> to pass through, creating bright interior spaces.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Self-cleaning surface<\/strong> \u2013 Its non-stick, anti-static surface repels dust and dirt, making it <strong>easy to maintain<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>UV and chemical resistance<\/strong> \u2013 ETFE doesn\u2019t degrade under ultraviolet exposure and resists most atmospheric pollutants.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Durability<\/strong> \u2013 With a lifespan of over 25 years, ETFE is ideal for long-term use in harsh weather conditions.<\/li><\/ul><p>In short, ETFE is a smart, sustainable material that\u2019s redefining what&#8217;s possible in transparent, lightweight, and iconic architectural designs.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Does an ETFE Roof Work?<\/h2><p>An <strong>ETFE roof<\/strong> is essentially a type of <strong>tensile membrane structure<\/strong>, using flexible ETFE film as the outer skin of the roof. Instead of relying on rigid materials like glass or metal, it works by maintaining <strong>tension within the membrane<\/strong>, either through pre-stressed cable systems or air-filled cushions. This tension-based design allows the roof to span large areas with minimal support, making it incredibly lightweight and visually elegant.<\/p><p>The most common ETFE roof systems include <strong>single-layer membranes<\/strong> supported by cables, or <strong>multi-layer ETFE cushions<\/strong>, which are inflated with low-pressure air (usually maintained by a small air pump system).
